Bahasa is Now Officially Taught at Al Azhar University in Egypt, UMS is Among the Pioneers

Bahasa, Indonesian Language is now officially taught at Al-Azhar University in Egypt. Indonesian language learning program in Egypt was launched and inaugurated by the Chancellor of Al-Azhar University Prof. Dr. Muhammad Husein Al-Mahrosowi, Indonesian Ambassador Helmy Fauzi, Rector of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) Prof. Dr. Sofyan Anif M.Sc, Chancellor of Gajah Mada University (UGM) Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono and Deputy Chancellor of Islamic State University (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang Dr. Isyroqun Najah. The Inauguration is held on Wednesday,  October 9th 2019 at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. Due to this inauguration, Bahasa is now being the 16th language to be taught at Al-Azhar University.  UMS, UGM, and UIN Malang are the pioneers of the program.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Husein Al-Mahrosowi  as the Chancellor or Al-Azhar University expressed his gratitude and high appreciation toward Indonesian Embassy in Cairo for facilitating and making Indonesian language as one of subject to be taught at Faculty of Languages and Tarjamah University of Al-Azhar which will be used as a study department in the future.

This is a concrete form of cooperation, Indonesia assisted Al-Azhar University in opening Indonesian Language Study Department at leading universities in Egypt. Prof. Sofyan Anif M.Sc, as the Chancellor of UMS proudly mention  it’s such a honor that UMS can promote Indonesian Language internationally. 

"We fully support the opening of Indonesian Language Study Department at Al Azhar University in Egypt. Moreover, this is part of our responsibility as a Muhammadiyah College. Besides UMS, there are also UGM and UIN Malang involved in opening Indonesian Language Study Department in Egypt," said the Rector of UMS, Prof. Sofyan Anif M.Sc.

Sofyan Anif added, the opening of Indonesian Language Study Department  at leading university in Egypt was not purposed for the sake of UMS and Muhammadiyah only, but further,  for the sake of Indonesian citizen and our nation. This shows that Indonesian language is now widely recognized and has a place in the hearts of the people of Egypt.

"UMS feels that we has a great responsibility for the nation. Why do we fully support because in the opening of this study department, UMS has an interest as the leading sector of Muhamamdiyah University (PTM). Moreover, the Head of Muhammadiyah's Special Branch (PCIM) in Egypt has stands straightly and it’s ready to support this program totally, "Sofyan Anif added.

Indonesian Ambassador to Egypt also deliver his appreciate to UMS, UGM and UIN Malang that willing to collaborated with Al Azhar University in introducing and promoting Indonesian Language as material for science studies at Al Azhar University. "As representatives of the government, we would like to thank UMS, UGM and UIN Malang for the initiative to open the BI Study Program in Al Azhar. This is very good for the development and increasingly introducing Indonesian Language in the Middle East, "he said.

Indonesian Ambassador, Helmy Fauzy  also hoped that Indonesian Language would be more recognized by students of Al Azhar University. I Indonesian Embassy is also ready to help the cooperation between these universities.

Meanwhile, the Rector of Gajah Mada University said that he was happy with the opening of Indonesian Language Study Department in Egypt, which was initiated by the three campuses. "I, as the leader of UGM, appreciate this program. What we are doing now is one of UGM service for the country, "he explained.

Before signing the MoU with Al Azhar University, a group from UMS, UGM and UIN Malang also took a chance to visit and have a meal with the ranks of the Indonesian Embassy to Egypt. In this opportunity,  Rector of UMS was asked to sing Sewu Kutho (a song by Didi Kempot). While the Rector of UGM was asked to sing  Yogyakarta song.

As known, the Rector of UMS, Prof. Dr. Sofyan Anif was in Egypt to establish cooperation with a number of universities in the State of the Pyramid since Saturday (10/10/2019).

The visit of the Chancellor and his entourage was in the context of educational cooperation with several universities in Egypt, especially with Al-Azhar University. The Chancellor of UMS together with the Chancellor of UGM and UIN Malang established cooperation with Al-Azhar in the context of opening Indonesian Language learning at the Faculty of Language and Tarjamah University of Al-Azhar.

This visit to Egypt was also a reciprocal visit to the Al-Azhar Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Husein Al-Mahrosowi and Grand Shaykh Prof. Dr. Ahmad At-Thoyyib who ever visited  Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS) in 2018. The Head of Tazakka Islamic Boarding School KH. Anizar Masyhadi accompanied and accompanied the Education Attache of Indonesian Embassy in Cairo, who mapped out cooperation with several universities in Egypt.

The whole entourage then also took time to pray at Al-Azhar Great Mosque in Cairo on Sunday (6/10/2019). Professor of UGM and Former Education Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo Prof. Dr. Sangudi also participating in this agenda. (PR)
